Which build should you pick?
Most people want the plain installer: the EXE on Windows, the DMG on macOS, the AppImage on Linux. Reach past it only for a reason. Choose the Windows MSI if a system administrator deploys software for you, or the 7z if you want a portable copy that leaves no trace on the machine. On macOS, the only real question is your chip: an M1, M2, M3, or M4 means Apple Silicon (ARM64); anything older is Intel. Check the Apple menu → About This Mac if you are not sure. On Linux, the AppImage is the fastest way to run once; Flatpak, Snap, or the PPA are better if you want the package manager to keep Inkscape updated. The 1.4.4 release also added installer files for Windows on Arm.

- Windows: run the .exe and accept the defaults. If SmartScreen warns, choose More info → Run anyway — the file is signed by the project.
- macOS: open the .dmg, drag Inkscape into Applications. On first launch Gatekeeper may say "unidentified developer"; right-click the app and choose Open once.
- Linux: mark the AppImage executable with
chmod +x, then double-click or run it from a terminal. Flatpak and Snap register themselves in your menu. - Launch Inkscape. The first start takes a few seconds while it builds its font cache, then you land on a blank canvas.

Get it from the project, not a mirror shop. Inkscape is free software. Any site that charges for it, wraps it in a download manager, or advertises an "Inkscape Pro" is not the project. Note too the 1.4.4 macOS caveat: if you start Inkscape from the command line, extensions are disabled — a security fix (CVE-2025-15523) in the official .dmg. Launch it normally and extensions work as usual.
